Why Tracking Carbon Emissions Is Suddenly A Billion Dollar Opportunity
As extreme weather events roiled communities around the world this summer, businesses and governments are feeling more pressure than ever to respond to climate change.
Tracking emissions has historically been difficult, because the methods for tracking a company’s carbon footprint are all over the place. In the U.S., corporate sustainability reporting remains unstandardized and largely voluntary. But the landscape looks better in Europe, as a recently adopted proposal is set to expand the number of companies that must produce sustainability reports. That measure will also require more detailed and standardized disclosures and impose mandatory audits.

Watch One Year Of Carbon Emissions Take Over The Planet
It’s hard to miss something that weighs 37 billion tons—especially when it’s all around us. Thirty-seven billion tons is the amount of fossil-fuel-related carbon dioxide humans release into the atmosphere every year. We see the damage it does everywhere—from heat waves to floods to droughts to wildfires and more. But the CO2 itself? Entirely invisible. Until now.

Global energy-related carbon emissions hit record high in 2023: IEA
According to the International Energy Agency's latest report, global emissions of carbon dioxide hit a record high last year. IEA analysis revealed carbon emissions increased by 1.1% in 2023, but the trend has slowed from previous years, thanks to increasing use of green energy. China remains the biggest emitter -- responsible for 35% of global carbon output. The US trails behind at around 12%, while India has surpassed the European Union to become the world's third-largest emitter.
